REVIEW: Scent Trunk

Hello everyone! I was recently contacted by Scent Trunk which is a monthly fragrance subscription service. They generously offered to send me one of their boxes to review. Now to be fair, I have said time and time again that I am not a HUGE perfume person, however I do have 2 scents that I will wear (Calvin Klein Reveal and Jo Malone Redcurrant and Cream). I do like distinct scents, so the fact that Scent Trunk allows you to build a scent profile and curates samples to match those preferences definitely helps those who may not be perfume aficionados.  Read on about my experience with Scent Trunk and check out the discount code at the end if it sounds like something you’d be interested in!

They’ve now actually sent me 2 boxes – one for May, one for June. The one I received in May was not such a great match. I disliked all 3 scents that came in it. The June box was much better suited to my likings. It arrived in a small white box and all 3 samples were in a small velvet pouch. Each fragrance comes with an information card about the scent notes as well as tips for time of wear, etc.

According to the information they sent me:

Samples should last you about 30 days. We want to be educational about how we approach scents in everything we do. That’s why we created Scent School on our blog.
Here’s a quick lesson…

Scent School: Fragrance Concentration
One interesting thing you’ll find with Scent Trunk, is that you’ll get a different amount of each of your fragrances, and you’re probably wondering why!

The fragrance oil is what makes a scent rich, and long-lasting.  Different fragrances have different amounts of oil and this affects its longevity.  Here are the different types of fragrances and the amount of oil in them:
1)      Eau Fraiche: 3% or less
2)      Eau de Cologne: 2 – 5%
3)      Eau de Toilette: 4 – 10%
4)      Eau de Parfum: 8 – 15%
5)      Soie de Parfum: 15 – 18%
6)      Parfum: 15 – 25%

Some vials will be smaller, but that is due to their high fragrance concentration. The higher the fragrance concentration, the less an individual needs to apply.

Journey Woman was my favourite of the bunch – it was slightly fruity, sweet, but had an almost tea-like scent (perhaps it’s the jasmine). The main deterrent for me however came when I went onto the site and discovered that this perfume costs $315 USD for 1.7oz. Ouch! Niche brands are expensive!
Now I did inquire about why a Canadian based company was charging in US dollars and I was told it was because most of their current clients are in the US. The box costs $15 USD/month for 3 samples EDIT: As of July 9, 2015 the price of the monthly box has increased to $18USD, or $20 USD per box for seasonal boxes that contain 4 samples. Because of our floundering Canadian dollar, it will cost more with conversion. However, if you are a perfume-lover who is looking to try some new, niche-brand fragrances, then definitely give Scent Trunk a try.
They have generously offered 25% off of your first subscription box with the code gorgeous25 that is valid until July 10th, 2015. Check them out at http://www.scenttrunk.com.
